In the coming years, with the help of navigation electronic map products, the dream of Chinese drivers easily traveling around the world will soon come true.
"With the help of the satellite navigation and positioning system, drivers can easily follow the system prompts to reach their destination and never get lost again."Li Lei,deputy director of the Software Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and deputy director of the National Research Center for Satellite Navigation Application System Design and Integration Engineering, said at the"Informatization and New Industrialization Road Forum"held in Tianjin.
Satellite navigation applications refer to the use of position, velocity, and time information provided by satellite navigation systems to locate, navigate, and monitor various targets. As one of the eight major international wireless industries and one of the three fastest-growing information industries globally, satellite navigation systems can be widely applied in fields such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, mechanical control, tourism exploration, and navigation, aerospace, etc.
Li Lei believes that the rapid development of China's automotive industry and China's acquisition of the hosting rights for the 2008 Olympics and 2010 World Expo have provided a huge market demand for the civilian use of satellite navigation industry.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Transport, there are currently 4.3 million freight vehicles,1.7 million passenger vehicles, and over 900000 ships in China that need to be equipped with satellite navigation systems. At the same time, the demand for new car optional systems is growing rapidly. In 2005,the demand for automobiles in China will exceed 5.5 million vehicles. In the coming years, the demand for satellite navigation systems by mainland Chinese cars will rapidly develop at a rate of over 20%per year.At present, the Chinese government is vigorously promoting the application of satellite navigation and positioning systems in the civilian sector.China's Beidou satellite navigation system, which has independent intellectual property rights, has recently been approved by the State Council and the Central Military Commission and will enter the civilian field.According to Li Lei,compared to the one-way transmission of information by the US GPS system, the advantage of the Beidou system lies in its short message two-way communication function. The central station can immediately contact all terminals, which is crucial for vehicle supervision, scheduling, and ship rescue. It is more suitable for logistics enterprises, railways, ships, and long-distance vehicles.
In October 2002,China's first autonomous navigation electronic map product with independent intellectual property rights,in compliance with automotive industry standards and Chinese laws, was launched on the market. It is expected that by 2005,the system will cover most parts of the country.
In October this year, the National Satellite Navigation Application System Design and Integration Engineering Research Center, with a fixed investment of over 155 million yuan, was officially established. It is responsible for formulating standards for the domestic satellite navigation market and conducting related research and development work, and focuses on promoting the civilian use of China's satellite navigation industry.
It is expected that by 2005,the scale of China's satellite navigation application market will exceed 10 billion yuan, the output value of satellite navigation application products will reach 8 billion yuan, and the output value of navigation operation services will exceed 2 billion yuan.
Like the development of the internet,China's research and application of satellite navigation systems will take advantage of its latecomer advantages and achieve rapid development driven by huge market demand.
